OK, so I found a solution, I set

  MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes

to disable ifplugd. ifplugd was waiting for the interface to become
"alive" to enable the device, and this apparently doesn't work on
vmware. The feature supports hotplugging---so you don't have to worry
your pretty little head about typing "ifup ethX" when plugging in a
network cable...

Now, this bring us to the OSCAR question: Is this something we need to
worry about for OSCAR? Not for vmware, but for client NICS that don't
support MII? A Google for "MII_NOT_SUPPORTED mandrake" get about 2000
hits, not a lot on the Google scale. I can't see any reason to let
ifplugd get in the way, especially as hotplugging and clusters is an
oxymoron.

I propose we always set

  MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes

on the clients to avoid this potential problem.
