I liked the old index page, but I guess its fate has already been decided.
I've added my new 3.6 topic on both index and sidebar without difficulty, 
and for the number of times a whole new topic is added, I didn't think it 
was that much of a burden. But autogen would be nice!

PS Can someone proofread/correct my new 3.6?

PPS Also did a quick strike-through in "Appendix A" pending rewrite.
