I'm trying to build a cluster out of a dozen old systems of varying hardware
types but the same general architecture. But at the moment, I'm building a
server/node "cluster" in VMware because I know how much of a pain in the ass
this is going to be. Plus a fedora reinstall on a vm & mounted ISO goes
faster than a burned dvd on a old pentium 4.

The OS I'm trying to use is fedora core 8 with emphasis on "trying". I'm
downloading FC7 because my patience for this is running out and I have hit a
dead end. Since I'm using a development version and it is breaking in
different ways on a _fresh_ install, I figure this is the stuff you guys
would like to know about.

The current version of OSCAR I'm using is the 1-11-08 nightly build because
it is the only one that supports FC8. I'm going to use FC7 next, and failing
*that* I'll give FC6 a whirl. I'll use something else before I step more
than 3 full fedora releases back.

yume won't install without the --nogpgcheck switch on yum, the yume package
isn't signed.

The install_cluster script won't run to completion without the following
packages:

perl-xml-simple
perl-html-tree
xinetd
php-pear
xmlstarlet
dhcp

I have to install these manually. This is one hell of a way to learn
linux...

Once I finally convince the install script to reach the GUI stage, the
wizard won't let me install oscar packages on the server without the
following:

csh <--- needed by pvm
ksh <--- needed by ssh-oscar

libaio <--- needed by opkg-lam-server
libaio-devel <--- needed by opkg-lam-server
lesstif <--- needed by i forget
rrdtool <--- needed by opkg-ganglia-server

There is a conflict between sge and monarch which I don't have any idea how
to fix. Disabling sge allows me to install the packages.

Finally, I can't create the client images at all. It is failing in a way I
can't fix - I *know* it is short on packages, but I don't know how to fix
it.

The spew in terminal is here: http://www.pastebin.ca/851837

I am going to install on FC7 and use a trunk build, and hope for the best.
