Did you try the "Use Your Own Kernel" (uyok) option under setup networking?
That often fixes driver problems, though not always when the head and
compute nodes are different as yours are.
You also might check the BIOS settings (after updating?) and see if there
are any "strange power saving modes" enabled since the error messages
mention something like that. Thats probably a long shot though.
Have you loaded linux (or run a liveCD) and checked to see if there are any
significant driver differences between the head and compute nodes? It is
possible they are very different.
