Thanks to all for the help on this mess - found the issue. The redhat
gui for configuring the nic card did not add the default gateway for the
outside nic card - the default was set to gateway for the nic going to
the compute nodes.  I am not sure just how I was able to get in before -
but I added the correct route for the outside nic card and deleted the
internal gateway for the nic card pointing at the compute nodes and all
is well.

What was the real help was that one of you out there said - can you get
google from the headnode - no way because of no gateway.  I was under
the impression that this was taken care of by the gui that floated over
the nic but I guess in this situation the gateway that I put in for the
internal nic took  first place over the gateway that I put in for the
external nic.

Oscar is up and running on my small cluster.   Thanks again for putting
up with my newbieism!
