When you say the rescue failed, what do you mean?

If the rescue disk failed to boot, then there is a serious hardware
compatability problem.
If it succeeded booting, then you should try to copy the modprobe.conf
file from the temporary rescue disk file system and copy it to the
real file system.  That may fix the problem.
