No-one is doubting for a second that a functional language may be more appropriate for building a compiler. However the point that I fear is being missed is that for many, including myself, there is little value in learning YAPL that will inevitably be used for only 1 thing. I can almost certainly guarantee that if I learned OCAML, or Haskell - or any other functional language for that matter - that it would not be used in my commercial work. It's just not what I do.
