You've got to be kidding, right? Don't tell me you seriously can't think of
any way to use 3D graphics..?

If we're talking old-style 2D interfaces, one thing I really like about
shader accelerated 2D graphics is being able to create "filter" areas. There
is one example in recent Aero screenshots, where the semi-transparent title
bars blurs whatever is underneath it. A nice brushed glass kind of effect.
I'll probably exceed "good taste" and use refraction-style bars/buttons.

It's a bit like having Photoshop filters available for all graphic elements
everywhere in the system, in real time. Well, if you're on Windows, I'm not
sure what the "light" players for other operating systems can do. 
But it's an open format, so anyone can write a player without being scared
of the Big Bad Company. I bet we'll see a new XAML-based windows shell for
Linux sooner or later...
