Quite a lot (I see someone else gave some examples). Many companies release as GPL but then offer a commercial license so people can pay to escape its restrictions. Don't forget the code owner can also make money from their open source library from being *the* expert on it. When VeryBigCorp needs a customized version of your library they'll come to you first and ask you to name your price. (wishful thinking? :-) Then there are books, conferences, and of course the way it helps your CV. (Those only apply if the project becomes big and successful, but if it doesn't you wouldn't have made any money from it anyway.)
