The new function similarly uses context before and after the value, but is also invariant to the number that is presently there (one reason we changed the function). However, it is also more expensive to use. Since one wouldn't expect to be calling the functions other than during setup, that might not be an issue.
I don't think it's an issue either. And not being dependent on the value that's currently there is good. So in the interest of uniformity, could you look into doing the same thing in both cases (using the same function)?
