I wanted to see if discussion between you two would get to a concensus,
but as Wojtek said it seems your requirements are too different...
In my opinion, if I have to choose between the two ways of doing things,
knowing the previous unit used is better than having to figure out what
context to use. From what I've seen in your examples Kris, the right
context to use can be quite cryptic, whereas the previous unit number is
straightforward.
So my vote goes with the current way of doing things. And it should be
easy to modify the current ShadowMap and SoftShadowMap shaders to allow
changing the unit used by using the same search & replace functions that
are currently in StandardShadowMap.
That's my opinion at least.
