You're right, maintenance is probably harder with that !

A real situation I've encountered (but not essential...) : switching betewwen 
LDR and HDR rendering : LDR shaders where looking for normalized values and HDR 
don't. (I didn't write these crazy shaders, and it was probably a bad idea to 
keep this)

=> very good reason, and in my opinion, the best one to have these parameteres 
on the osg::Array class.
