The near plane is typically negative for orthographic projections.

For a perspective projection (call to glFrustum()), the near and far planes
must both be positive.

Subject: [osg-users] negative near clipping plane?

In our application, we are seeing CullVisitor::getCalculatedNearPlane()
return negative values.

We're using OSG version 1.1, but in looking at 2.0, I don't see anything
which would preclude the near plane from going negative. Should we be
clamping the near to a small positive number, or is this being done
somewhere and I just haven't found it?
