I certainly did not want to sound confrontational... Sorry if that was 
how I came through.

My answer to the question in the subject line would be: "never - fix the 
real problem instead." That's why I think it would be really nice to 
eliminate as many explicit uses of single threaded mode in the examples 
as possible.

Of course, never say never, there may be legitimate reasons, but they 
should be pretty rare - just look at how widespread multi-core machines 
are, and how many games tout being optimized for multi-threaded 
operation nowadays...

Anyways, that's one of my soapboxes, along with Vista, OSG 2.x, etc. :-)
