I can't split it because I am using an object of type SmokeEffect. I am not
building the particle system myself, I am just using a predefined effect.

 

As far as I know (or knew), SmokeEffect is a node you can add to the scene
graph and creates smoke at the point where you place it (taking transforms
into account).

 

It behaves this way on OSG 2.4 but not on 2.6 or newer.

And that's what I am still trying to understand and/or solve.

are you splitting the particle system? AFAIK one part must be attached to
something static and another part to the transform.
