It's not just version numbers, I believe there is general it's build
information in their too.  I'll have to defer to the original
contributor for a full explanation - Sherman... can you provide a good
resume of this feature?

I think the svn/trunk is working under Windows again, although it
won't have been tested by as many users of late as OSG-2.8 should have
been.
