I'm jumping into this thread a bit late, but I'll just add that I've written a COLLADA loader for a different project, and I didn't use the DOM (I found it hard to understand, and figured I could implement the features myself in less time than it would take to learn it). It wasn't a trivial amount of effort, but it's certainly doable.
