Hi Robert, I don't think this is an issue of version numbers. NO version of osg so files was on the LD path because of the foul up in the ld.so.conf.d file that sets up the loader cache. I suspect it is put there by the make install_ld_conf command because if I run it again it trashes the loader config file the same as before and I have to fix it manually again.
