We have stopped using IRIX some years back. The rest of the unixes, followed about two years later. Where only irix had problems with the c++98 type c headers like cmath. So, if we consider IRIX dead this change should be safe.
I would be careful with the argument with the gnu compilers. Where I believe we should be safe for this particular change, sometimes you rely on 3rd party (binary) libraries compiled with the native compilers.
