Hi Daniel, I'm afraid I'm a bit too cold on osgManipulator to answer your questions as it's been a while since I worked on it last, and I'm not the original author so the design isn't in printed in my head. The only way for me to answer you question would be to sit down the code and spend the time working out how it worked. Which is basically in the same situation as you, unfortunately I can't scale myself to level of support for a community of many thousand so it'll be best if you just dived in the to the code.
