Some time ago it was mentioned that somebody wrote a plugin to
render a large number of people. Where is the plugin if not
in OSG? The same plugin would most probably work with the distant
trees.

Somebody could take a look at "niftools.sourceforge.net".
I can provide Morrowind NIF files if that somebody needs them.
I have Oblivion but I don't know when I'm able to install it.

This is second time I suggest the project. I digged more
and found that the following paper "Designing a PC game engine"
explains briefly the Netimmerse engine:

The main point seems to be the use of a scenegraph.
The NIF format contains parts of the scenegraph and thus should
be more or less easy to convert to OSG.

David Eberly has also published the book "3D Game Engine Design"
which described the Netimmerse engine. Greatly expanded second
edition is coming out soon.
