I don't think this was a problem in the 1.0 release because I've been
using it for quite a while. But when I recently downloaded the 1.1
release, I did see the same problem you are describing. I tried some of
the same things you tried with the same results (although I never did
get the viewer to actually come up).

Subject: [osg-users] Bug in 3DS file loading

Hello,

Is anybody able to load 3DS (3D Studio) files on Linux with the current
CVS version? For me it always takes ages and then nothing is displayed
in the osgviewer. I first thought that this is caused by a corrupted
file, however this is not the case - the same thing happens for any 3DS
file I try to load and the file looks OK in 3DS Max. This problem is
present in OSG at least since 1.0, probably longer.

I have enabled OSG_NOTIFY_LEVEL=DEBUG and this is what I have got:

- - The file seems to be parsed OK
- - There is a call to TristripVisitor::stripify() which takes ages to
finish even on a very small file
- - When the empty viewer appears, I am seeing messages like:

_clampProjectionMatrix not applied, invalid depth range, znear =
3.40282e+38 zfar = -3.40282e+38

That looks like that no geometry was created.

I have tried to disable the optimizer (no change) and also commented out
the stripification from the 3ds plugin. That removed the longish wait on
loading, however still nothing is displayed.

I have attached the notify output from the viewer, the stripification in
the 3ds plugin was disabled when I generated this.

Furthermore, I have noticed that the 3ds plugin is using a local copy of
an old version of the lib3ds library. Is there a reason for this? The
current version is 1.2, the version included in the plugin is 1.1. Why
is this not an external dependency, same as e.g. Coin or libpng?

Regards,

Jan
