Hi there; I am just looking for an easy and supported file format(may be by a concortium, or sourceforge, or some other well-known) to save my animated files. I have searched around and were able to find some like VRML, X3D, Collada, 3DXML, xVRML, 3ds, fbx, XAML,U3D, directx do any of you have any idea about which one to prefer? I want my files to be able to save animation files in addition to modelling, and want it to be as easy as possible, and also compatible with osg (may be via already written plug-ins) and easily convertible to other standardized formats maybe. The animations will however be complex ones and I will be using OSG or Maya in reading and writing these files. Upto now what I have in hand is that;
* osgDB supports vrml 1.0 files and has somehow incomplete plug-in for vrml 2.0, the link on the osg-plugin page - vrml 2.0 reader plugin. * 3Ds seems to have a complex structure(at last I couldnt resolved easily) and the specifications seems to be not opened, (I am not sure maybe I am wrong). * DirectX seems to be only for windows. * 3DXML seems to be just for modelling files. * Collada seems to be good enough since now has support of physics but seems less popular to other vrml and x3d, or maybe I am wrong. * VRML and X3D seems to have the standard about web3D. I will be gratefull about listening your experiences with any of these formats or others (that I am not aware of :( ) Any ideas, any articles and any links discussing the advantages and disadvantages will be greatly appreciated.
