The Optimizer has been using DataVariance for a number of years - it uses to decide whether it can share state - as only state that is declared as STATIC is safe to share. Its also used to decide whether Transform nodes can be flatten. Other than that it hasn't been used much elsewhere. End users might use it though. The use of DataVariance for the purpose of managing threading is something I haven't tucked up my sleeve for quite some while.
