how does the output (.osg) look like? Are the textures you are using mentioned
at all in it?

The Optimizer threw away the images after they've been uploaded to
texture memory. This saves memory in the running application.

Duh. You can tell the Optimizer not to do that.

The textures are not mentioned in the output file. But switching off
the optimizer solves the problem.
