I am not sure what the distinction would be between the current osgi-dev list and the proposed osgi-users list.
The current osgi-dev list is described as: "This is a technical mail list for OSGi Developers. Any OSGi technical discussion or questions are acceptable here." Since OSGi is a specification (and the implementations all have their own -users lists), the "users" of the specification *are* developers. Yes, the type of questions may vary from detailed discussion of some areas of the spec to "how do I install a bundle?" But these are all developer questions. The type of questions like "how do I start the framework?" are more implementation specific questions that are outside the scope of the OSGi specifications. These sorts of questions are best handled in the implementation specific forums. But perhaps I am missing something here. Do you see the 2 lists catering to developers of differing OSGi experience levels? How do we describe the 2 lists to make sure that people use the appropriate list? -- BJ Hargrave Senior Technical Staff Member, IBM OSGi Fellow and CTO of the OSGi Alliance [EMAIL PROTECTED] office: +1 386 848 1781 mobile: +1 386 848 3788 From: Neil Bartlett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: OSGi Mail List Developer <[email protected]> Date: 2008-02-01 15:57 Subject: [osgi-dev] Need for "osgi-users" list Hi, There doesn't seem to be a mailing list or forum for newbies to get general help with OSGi programming that is not specific to any particular OSGi implementation. For example I have today received a question by email as follows: "can I access a service through some kind of static method rather than an instance of BundleContext". Yes, we all know this is a wrong-headed question, but newbies to OSGi are going to have questions like this, and they need a safe and welcoming place to ask them and get answers. This list is clearly not the right forum. Might I suggest creating an "osgi-users" mailing list? Of course we would also need some OSGi experts who are prepared to subscribe to the list and spend a little time answering questions.
