Rebels deny hand in deadly Burma blasts

ISN SECURITY WATCH (09/05/05) - Opponents of Burma's military regime
on Sunday denied responsibility for a series of bomb blasts in the
capital Yangon on Saturday that killed at least 11 people and wounded
more than 150 others.

The ruling military government blamed three ethnic rebel groups and
the country's pro-democracy government in exile, the National
Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB), for the attacks.
According to media reports, three timed devices exploded almost
simultaneously near a center hosting a Thailand trade fair and two
crowded shopping centers.

Junta authorities blamed the Karen National Union (KNU), the Shan
State Army-South (SSA), and the Karenni National Progressive Party for
the attacks, saying that the rebels were acting "with the objective of
disrupting stability and tranquility".
Both the Karen and Shan rebel groups denied any involvement in the
weekend blasts, instead blaming junta "infighting" for the country's
worst attacks in decades.
According to Reuters, the rebels blamed a power struggle within the
junta and have indicated that the violence may be linked to the ouster
of military intelligence chief and former prime minister Khin Nyunt
last year.

A week ago, two women were killed and more than ten others were
injured in a blast in the city of Mandalay. Late last month, Burma's
Karen rebels reportedly ambushed and killed at least eight people on
the Dawei-Ye highway in the country's Tanintharyi district.
Though no Thais were injured in the blast, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra ordered the airlift evacuation of hundreds of Thai
nationals participating in the trade fair in Rangoon.
Burma's military, which has ruled the Southeast Asian country (also
known as Myanmar) since 1962, has been trying to form truce deals with
dozens of rebel groups. However, tensions increased following the
purge of Nyunt, who had successfully brokered previous ceasefires with
the rebels.
