Swiss President confirms Swiss mediation between Syria, Israel POL-SWITZERLAND-MIDEAST Swiss President confirms Swiss mediation between Syria, Israel (With photos) GENEVA, January 22 (KUNA) -- Swiss Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey confirmed Monday that Switzerland had been mediating between Syria and Israel, noting the Swiss mediator was currently in Syria. However, the Swiss President refused to elaborate on the direction of this mediation or expected results. Calmy-Rey rejected Monday, in her first press conference after assuming the Presidency of her country, accusations that Switzerland tilted towards the Palestinians in the Middle East. The Swiss President stressed that during the war in Lebanon her country had a neutral position between Israel and Hezbollah; therefore, her country never had a biased role, she said, stressing that Switzerland would not apply double standards. Calmy-Rey also announced that she would meet in Davos during the meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEFORUM) the President of the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. She stressed that the Geneva initiative was not dead, and if a final accord was reached some 80 to 90 percent of the solutions presented within the initiative would probably be incorporated.(end) hn. rb KUNA 221452 Jan 07NNNN +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
