Michael and all--

No, no one said anything, although I invited posts 2 or 3 times.

Standard closing: listening object passed around the circle one time for response to an inviting question (in this case it was, "What does going home mean for you now?"), followed by everybody stand up, face the outside of the circle from behind your chairs, remember that as you go out into the world, these folks are all at your back, now take one step out into the world, and it's over.

Yes, there was a party the night before, some didn't go to bed till 5:00 am. The organizers at the local level had a lot of inflexibility imposed upon them from the State Department, and by the intermediary hired by the State Department to supervise the local folks. Things changed from the original pretty much up to about 3 days before the OST session.

I had pushed to have the whole conference in Open Space, but my contact would not push her compatriots further, even though she is a champion for OST.

Michael, thanks for taking time to carry this conversation deeper.

Dear Doug,
thanks for the data.
Were any of your assumptions on why no sessions were planned beyond the
2hr event spoken to in the "standard closing"?
And, what characterizes a "standard closing" in your practice?

Here are some of the thoughts while reading your notes:
---As an experienced os-worker I wouldn not go to a 2hr os-event unless
my life depended on it OR for reasons that had nothing to do with the Theme
---At the end of a 3 day "regular" event I would feel especially
stressed to get up early enough to be at any kind of event at 8:30
(assuming there was a party the night before)
---It surprised me that anyone showed up at a "last session" at the end
of such an event... I would have my head into last minute informal
meetings, getting my luggage in order, etc.

Have a great day,
mmp

Friends--

Here is what happened at the OS for Fulbright Scholars from the Americas
for their re-entry program:

Our allotted time was 8:30 to 10:30 am yesterday, April 13. This was
their last session of a 3+ day seminar for people from the Americas
prior to their returning to their home countries.

Theme: "Going Home: Issues and Opportunities"

Opening was standard, plus: we had a grid as if this were the first
session of a 3 day event. One session today, 4 sessions on day 2, one
session on day 3. We had stickies for time and place for each session in
the virtual future. I explained the two-sleep rule of thumb and
encouraged them to post more topics than we had time for, and they would
then take the responsibility for gathering folks via Skype, email,
conference call, etc.

We started out with about 8 participants. Midway through the opening
circle process explanation another 6 or so came in. Then just as folks
were about to name their topics, another group came in. We ended with 18
total.

Ten topics were posted, 3 sessions were held. They had about 45 minutes
for their conversations.

Then back in the plenary circle we made time for folks to post to the
next virtual days' sessions. No one posted anything. (I think maybe
because of the way people straggled in, not all had heard all the
invitations to post these sessions.) So we went into the standard
closing.
