Dear Harold and you other os workers around the world,

here is what I can do every day as far as "easy" steps are concerned

--- talk to someone today about what it means to a groups, an organísation and other similar critters to experience the force of selforganisation (pointing out that being in an OST event usually delivers) --- tell someone about a pretty good starting point to find out more about OST (books on the subject written by the fellow who stumbled on this and books by experienced os-practitioners on their work) --- calling a sponsor and have a chat on how things are going days or months or years after an os-event I facilitated --- contacting someone I think would benefit from and contribute to the spread of open space and invite her/him to come to Krakow (it would be great to have sponsors in Krakow)

I guess there are many other "easy" steps for many of us.

What I think belongs to the things not to do is what I have experienced in my former life as an OD consultant, supervisor, trainer: Creating standards, defining what it is and isnt, having a way of certifying os-workers/facilitators/supervisors/etc and creating institutions to watch over, copyright, etc. a process that has been unfolding since the big bang, packaging it like a "new", "revolutionary", "highly effective", "etc" medicine... its a sure way down to ossification and formalisation...

Greetings from a lovely morning in Berlin

Hi Artur,

Thanks for asking the Open Space Institute - U.S. to take some action.
Be it a YouTube channel or something else.

The watering down of the true essence of Open Space, and then slapping
"Open Space" on it, confuses everyone about what we've been
*successfully* accomplishing for 30 years. It's not the first time it's
happened, nor will it be the last - but each time it happens - there are
*innocent* people who get the wrong message about what is open space.

As the OSI-US meeting is tomorrow - I will bring this to the agenda. And
as Harrison Owen said, we all are authorized to start "institutes". A
coherent group effort can make the best difference here, starting from
any of the other open space institutes, practice groups, stammtisch's, etc.

I'm glad for this conversation to continue as a starting point for
making some coordinated actions (like blog articles, twitter posts,
youtube videos, letters to the editor, etc.) The greater difference Open
Space makes - the more likely there will be this kind of co-opting
effect. But a smaller effort now can help others spread the word when
things like this happen.

What easy steps can we take today, so that more people say in the face
of yucky things like the Campus Europae Higher Education Open Space:

"Hey - that's *not* an open space! You should try an authentic one!"

     Harold

Thanks for your answer, Hélène.
I am afraid that when we talk or write we have to use words. The point
is: shall we use "Open Space" without any further and correct
clarification or shall we always clarify what is our understanding of
what "Open Space" really is, in the context of OST?
But I agree with you that it would be much easier - and it is not
impossible - to use also images. For instance it would not be
difficult to create a channel on YouTube for Open Space (that is, Open
Space Technology) with many small films of successful OST events,
which could also be displayed - or linked from - the pages of OS
Institutes and practitioners around the world. I would suggest that
the OSI-US take the lead on creating that channel and selecting the
videos. I can provide the ones that were at the NING, I think
In a Pt OSonOS (Pt from Portugal), two years ago, in one of the
breakout sessions, there was a consultant lady, that was previously
the HR Director of the Portuguese delegation of a
larger pharmaceutical multinational. She told us that she was amazed
because*she understood for the first time what Open Space really was*,
even*if she had already attended some sessions organized for them by
consulting companies as being "Open Space" but where the facilitators
(?) were always intervening during all the session*. She finally
understood, from her experience at the Pt OSonOS, that what those
"facilitators" were doing was indeed closing the space for self
organization.
Have a nice Sunday

Hi Artur and all of us!
thank you Artur for your message!
I've already got such observations from a O.S.facilitator in France
who was upset about an official organisation (conseil régional) who
wanted her to organize a "so-called" O.S. which in fact would be no
O.S. (= not all of the problem as you told below, but with one big
distorsion: the contents of the different workshops of the O.S. were
decided before! and of course without the participants)
aren't you aware about living in a world where only words exist "really"?
so don't use words anymore!
best wishes to everybody

The question, Paul, is that talking to this or that DG at EU about
the "need to open the space" is not enough. There is a strong need to
explain what Open Space means!

In this case, they have used the name (Open Space), but nor the
procedures of an OST event, neither the spirit of Open Space.

Regards

Artur

A blessing Artur!
I have engaged with one of EU DGs the DG Connect and talked
extensively about the need for opening space in their events.
Who knows they are talking to each other?
