I went ahead and updated to Andorid 7 on my Samsung S7. OSMAnd+ 2.6.5 works well, a little faster, especially when finding a route. Battery consumption seems a little better, but is still woeful compared to older versions of OSMAnd, probably because there is more control over power-hungry apps! I have a problem with OSMAnd losing GPS signal when running in the background/screen off (between turns when navigating when the screen is turned off to save power), but I think I can tune Android to give permission.
