I try *not* to have more than 1500 favourites, because on every change a 
backup is created, which is very time consuming.
If you have groups which don't change often, export each group as gpx file 
and delete it in favs. Move this file to folder tracks or a subdirectory of 
tracks. From there you can load this gpx file to show the items. The file 
with favs has type wpt and can be used like tracks.
