>From a programming standpoint, I'm not sure if its possible either, but I agree with your analysis: intermediate destinations are what OsmAnd uses to show actual distances from a given point. The others mostly just provide personalized information on the map.
I'm still curious what happened to the alert feature on track waypoints.
