The "category" search SHOW <category> button switches the layer on for the
profile you are using, so it displays the whole category on your map for
the area shown.
I noticed that the search result list (ordered by distance) doesn't go on
forever. I think there is a limit, but I don't know if it's by number of
results or by distance or ...

I will close the issue. It was helpful, I learned a lot!
If you want something to work differently, you can always open another
github issue in https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/issues

Be prepared that what you think is a bug, usually turns out to be an
unexpected feature!
