Monkeh in #gentoo-chat on Freenode was able to point out that I was not removing the old modules before rebuilding, so my changes weren't actually being installed. The attached patch successfully sets the default volume to 0 on all channels using hdaudio. After thinking about it for a while, I think this is a more sane default than 90%. The potential for damage to audio equipment or ears when starting up with a default of 90% seems to outweigh the work involved in manually raising the volume to reasonable levels.
Finding default volumes that work for everyone is a never ending battle. If the volumes are set to 0 then majority of users will think that OSS doesn't work and then stop using it. Earlier the volumes were set to 80% by default but even that caused problems.

If you would like to do some hacking then we might try creating a dedicated mixer for your system. Could you compile and run the mixgen utility in the utils/ directory and send the output to me (mixgen thinkpad_t61). I can include it in the sources and you can then re-arrange the controls in a way that makes sense.

Otherwise could you try if setting the volume to 80% works for you. Maybe we can return the volumes back to it.

Best regards,

Hannu

Here's the mixgen output for my R61. The codec is identical to a T61.
