Considering how long Islam and Christianity have been around, I think  
it's fair to compare ten years ago with now.  I think you're  
conflating the Middle East, which is obviously an exporter or  
terrorism right now, with Islam.  It's the same problem as if you  
asserted that Christianity was a religion of terrorism twenty years  
ago when Ireland was knee-deep in terrorism.  It's just that the  
Middle East is mostly Muslim, much as Ireland is mostly Christian.

If Islam had spent most of its history supporting terrorism in most  
countries that were majority Muslim, then you might have a point, but  
it's just not true.  Even if the practitioners say it's true, it's  
not: it's just that violent tendencies of a particular region in a  
particular time are likely to express themselves through their  
religion, and this is doubly so when the region is screwed up largely  
through the imposition of a fundamentalist variant of the religion in  
question.
