And it should have been foreseeable given that the West has basically been meddling with societies that are largely tribal and feudal, and who don't take kindly to foreign interests setting up bases and disrupting their culture. Of course the answer to that problem is to just build more bases... I wish I knew the history of the Roman empire, and how they managed to do it.
