Apart from lying (politicians, lips moving) I agree with you. Perhaps  
because my Italian side of the family did value keeping personal stuff  
private, especially health matters.

As you say, as far as her daughter is concerned, she has been  
protected and supported by her family. Her daughter doesn't have to  
spend the rest of her life looking after a person with special needs.

Perhaps the driving motivation would have been political, but without  
knowing them personally, that's a mean spirited assumption.
