Its been widely reported that initially a large part of Hamas' appeal came from the fact that they were the only group not mired in corruption and incompetence. Of course that has changed now. There is a radical faction in Israel that professes that God wants all of Biblical Israel to be inhabited exclusively by Jews and denies that Palestinians have any right to exist as a people. And because they are the swing vote, the radicals in Israel have disproportionate influence. Israel is every bit as much a theocracy as Iran. Maybe neither one makes sense any more.
