Goodevening,
Well it looks like OTs in the US have nothing to worry about after all. Our good
friend, the office of inspector General, says that there were no adverse effects to
the $15oo caps that were placed on our service in 1998. Wow! I was totally unaware!
I'm so glad they cleared that up. I suppose there next study will prove the existence
of the Easter Bunny.
Below is an exerpt from the Eli Rehab. Report:
OIG Says Therapy Cap Worked Fine

WASHINGTON, DC (Eli Research) The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services has spent months trying to come up with an alternative to the
failed, and reviled, $1,500 annual cap on therapy services. But now the
HHS Office of Inspector General has issued a report claiming that
therapists complaints about the cap were much ado about nothing.

The report, titled Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy for
Medicare Nursing Home Patients (OEI-09-99-00560), looks at medical
necessity, cost and medical record documentation for nursing home
patients. And it concludes that the therapy cap was not as big an
impediment to quality care as therapists made it out to be.

The cap is currently on moratorium due to therapists and skilled
nursing facilities outcries that it prevented certain patients from
receiving needed care. But with the OIG saying that the caps were not
detrimental to patient care, it looks more likely than ever that CMS
will hit therapists with a similar cap in the future.
