I work in England and use x2 other 'cognitive assessments' - the first is
the Middlesex Elderly Assessment of Mental State (MEAMS)- I find this about
twice as long to administer than the MMSE, however it appears to better
distinguish between Depression and Dementia than the MMSE and offers
additional sub-tests looking at different areas of the brain. Along side
this I would usually also use the AMPS as this truly 'occupational'
assessment often appears more able to 'detect' early dementia or other brain
disorders and is increasingly gaining recognition form consultant
psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. I also may use the Rivermead
Behavioural Memory Battery- a more complexed assessment that evaluates
memory abilities necessary for daily living, e.g.. remembering appointments,
losing items, recalling conversations, recalling movements etc.

Hope this helps
