Hi
Our prosthetics and orthotics course covered all prosthetics and
orthotics. Our splinting course had a big section on temporary foot
orthotics and especially the care of arthritic and diabetic feet. In my
present position in terms of discharge planning we pay a lot of
attention to access, especially steps and railings. We work closely with
our PTs and set rehab goals jointly.
However in my first hospital student placement I was reprimanded for
taking a patient who was being discharged the following day into the
stairwell to check that he would be able to get into his home! Yes, I
think students can be confused by contradictory expectations. It's also
true that most people will accept the prevailing culture in a new
workplace and the oversimplified UE/LE split is quite pervasive.
