Lori-
I didn't even think of a feeding group! Great idea, Thanks!
I used to do 1 group a week, like you mentioned, and I called it "FUN
FRIDAY". The patients loved the social interaction with others, and it was
a nice change for them from the usual....sometimes it would be something
more fun...sometimes it would be an informative demo/question answer
group...I will get a group that is planning on going home and do a talk on
home safety & adaptive equipment, maybe do a handout with unsafe room and
divide into teams and have the teams circle the items that are unsafe.
Ron-
Why do you think the groups are usually not therapeutic? What kind of
groups are you talking about? I am tring to get an idea on WHY those in a
SNF don't use a group....that's why I am doing the lecture. I am trying to
cover positive/beneficial reasons to do a group...when appropriate. I get a
lot of positive reinforcement from both patients and family (increased
socialization, feeling that they are not the only ones to over come or have
to overcome barriers, new ideas).
I wonder if therapist may be scared about billing/coverage, or the time they
THINK it takes to set up a group, or they just don't see the benefit.

Another group I have done with low level clients is a feeding group. Maybe
that is too low level for your clients.

Where I am helping cover while another OT is on maternity leave(SCI
rehab),we
do one group activity/week that changes between the ones you mentioned.
They
call it GAP-group activity participation. We also include Recreation.
1)The first week I was there we did a scavenger hunt. We had paired them in

groups of 2-3 with a staff member if needed. We gave each group a slightly
different list of items to obtain that would send them to various places in
the
facility. It might be to get the room number of PT gym. To find a pencil.

To get there blood pressure read. To get someone's signature(maybe someone
in
the office that they might need to know or maybe the dieticians). The
object
was w/c mobility, to help them get used to the facility and find there way
around(so we tended to pair a client who had been there longer with a new
client), and cognitive. The groups worked together and came up with
stategies to get
their items the fastest. Some split the list up etc. It was really fun!

2)The second week they played a game called Taboo that I would say was
cognitive and fun group. I did not attend this session so do not have
details. It
is a game which you have a list of words that you can not use to help you
teammates try to guess the word you are describing.

3)Next week, we are having a cooking activity. Two of our client's are
going
home so it is also a celebration.
