I work in a transitional care center, under SNF guide lines. Most of the residents that are admitted to our floor lived alone and had very little interaction with people outside their homes. I love doing groups to increase their socialization and to increase motivation and self confidence amongst these residence, as well as meet the goals the OT has set for them. These residents love the groups. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandi Foreman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 11:52 PM Subject: [OTnow] Feelings on Medicare Groups
Hi All! I am a COTA at an ALF/SNF facility for a contract facility....just started accepting Med A pts. I have done groups previously in Med A setting and enjoy them. I have been asked to instruct different SNF's on types of groups. I have been told the reason groups are not used is pt's are too low level to participate. I believe if the group is set up correctly, and an appropriate group is used, it is a great experience both for the practitioner and the patient. What is everyone's feelings on the utilization of groups? Why do you use them....Why don't you? It's an informal talk that I am giving, and started some handouts: How to bill, medicare allowable minutes, types of groups, and a small list of activities for various cognitive levels. I tried to include a small sampling of groups that also include PT and speech, as they will also be attending. I was hoping you can help me add to my group activities, and I will be happy to share too....and those PT's (and maybe even ST's) that are on the list serve...I would LOVE your input, as I am kind of guessing on appropriate activities. I have: Wheelchair Mobility Group (OT/PT) Advanced Gait Group (OT/PT) Balance Group ((OT/PT) Cooking Group (OT/ST) Home Safety Group (OT/PT) Fine Motor Coordination Group (OT) Posture Group (OT/PT) ROM Group (OT/PT) Strengthening Group (OT/PT) Cognitive Group (OT/ST) That way everyone has a small sampling of types of groups. Included in each group is criteria, small sampling of activities, equipment, and group goals. I will list everything in my advanced gait group because I believe that is a group that people would tend to say it is primairly PT...... :) ADVANCED GAIT (high level group) Criteria: Ambulate with or without assistive device with min supervision Able to follow directions with min v/c's No evidence of vertigo or orthostatic hypotension Ability to maintain correct weight bearing status Example of Activities: Timed Ambulation Obstacle Course Courtyard Ambulation Treasure Hunt Question/Answer session on use of assistive devices Verbal Instruction/Correction when performing activities Equipment: Assistive Devices (if needed) Adaptive Equipment(if needed) (ie: reacher, walker basket/bags) Gait Belts Stopwatch Obstacles (stairs, cones, slopes, different terrain, etc.) List of items to find during courtyard ambulation/treasure hunt Group Goals: Increase functional mobility Instruct/Increase safety awareness during ambulation Decrease gait deviations Increase gait velocity Improve community ambulation skills Demo proper gait pattern and use of assistive device Demo/Instruct safe use of assistive device and adaptive equipment Anyone have any ideas in any categories in any group listed above? I would love for everyone to share group ideas that have worked for them!
