Subject: Re: [OTlist] Research on CDT versus Compression Wrapping Only

Sorry Joan,

CDT = Complete Decongestive Therapy. CDT is treatment strategy for
managing lymphedema. It includes:

1. MLD = Manual Lymphatic Drainage (i.e. a form of gently massage)

2. Compression wrapping use low-stretch elastic bandages

3. Exercises

4. Skin care

I have anecdotal and written evidence that compression wrapping
followed by compression garments is an effective treatment strategy.
But my experience and belief is that MLD is not effective nor even
contributes to limb volume reduction. What I am looking for is some
evidence supporting my belief.

A search of the Cochrane database did reveal the following summary:

quote> One crossover study of manual lymph drainage (MLD) followed by
quote> self-administered massage versus no treatment, concluded that
quote> improvements seen in both groups were attributable to the use
quote> of compression sleeves and that MLD provided no extra benefit
quote> at any point during the trial.

Unfortunately, the summary does not compare MLD + compression wrapping
to just compression wrapping alone.

WOW, that was long-winded....

Ron
