The CAPS isn't a license to practice anything and it isn't required by any funding organization that I'm aware of. I see it is more an indicator of a person's interest in aging in place and an attempt to provide a way for people from different professions and industries to have a common body of knowledge. I have recommended the courses for OT who are interested in home mods but don't have much building experience and for contractors who don't have much understanding of developmental process and aging. You can't predict what people take from the class, but the courses I took and the set of courses I monitored for someone else, stressed team work among professionals. If you are interested in how the National Association of Home Builders presents it you can check it out on www.NAHB.com I rely on my Nebraska and Iowa OT license for things like prof liability for services I provide related to residential accessibility design. Neither state requires a physician's referral to practice OT and neither state's licensure law can be interpreted to read that only an OT can provide evaluation and suggestions for home modifications. The CAPS designation has been useful for marketing within the building industry. I work in a private pay world and marketing is very important.
