Hello, I'm curious about this. What type of treatment do you provide for the neck and spine, as an OT? Thanks Liz

Just to reiterate... I work at a chronic pain clinic that has seven locations in TX. Each location is in a different city and has one therapist. Most locations have a PT, I believe only two have an OT. I almost never see my employer, and until recently have never had a conversation with him beyond "hello, how are you?". He came to my location and I asked him where he got his information. He told me it came from one of his PTs. When I told him that I believed the information to be incorrect he told me to just go ahead and treat the medicare patients myself and that if medicare paid, they paid.. and if they didn't, they didn't. Since then I emailed Trailblazer, who is the Medicare & Medicaid Services Contracted Intermediary/Carrier in this state, and asked them about OTs treating the spine for medicare patients. They said to allow 45 days for a response... I will keep you posted. The point of this posting is an email I (and every other therapist in the company) received from the PT that told our employer that OT could not treat the spine on medicare patients: FROM THE PT: "OT can only treat extremities, NOT back or neck (spine), so the script needs to mention anything but a back or neck code/diagnosis, otherwise you can't treat, UNLESS you can get the doctor to write a script for OT referral to improve independence with ADL's (activities of daily living). If the script states PT and the OT will treat, you will have to get an OT script first before you, as an OT treat. PT can treat almost any orthopedic problem and improve ADL's in general." I cannot wait to get a response from Trailblazer!!! I sure hope they give me something I can throw back at him!!!!! (sorry, had to vent. I have been treating neck and back for the past three years for worker's comp.)
