I see that my friendly OTs are still arguing over domain, and this is an
old one...the Upper Extremity. I listen to(read) Ron's arguments over
and over about Ots need to be focused on occupation and fight for
reimbursement...I agree with him....but, to separate the body into
sections and claim one as a domain, seems such a silly claim....the
truth is this was established by the modern and flawed medical
system...it was a way of getting additional dollars for rehab
services.....Let's be truthful.....PTs have the knowledge and training
to work on impairments and functional movements.....OTs have perhaps the
same (depending on the rigor of the program they attended).....PTs do
not typically focus on occupation (especially directly and for
reimbursement).....I argue that OTs need to fight for occupational
science and produce/show the research and create that need in our modern
medical system.....or I fear there will one day be no OT, and perhaps
there will just be a rehabilitation scientist who does it all......

Good gosh, I'm not questioning the PERSON's dedication to our
profession! I specifically omit the source and the name so as to keep
the original messenger anonymous and to "protect" them from any harm.
In the past, I've posted excerpts from other sources and OTnow readers
have followed by posting the entire message, including the source and
author. To me, this is not appropriate.

There' nothing out of context because the context is not relevant to
my question. My intent is to simply solicit discussion about the
comments.

I guess readers can also post their opinion about THIS situation.

Ron

OWP> Hello All:

OWP> I like taking messages from other resources and posting them here
for
OWP> discussion. So, here's an excerpt of a recent message from
another
OWP> listserve:

OWP> I want to express a concern before I proceed:
Physical
OWP> Therapists are doing a lot of research focusing on
improving
OWP> function in the upper extremity- to me this is OT's domain
and
OWP> in order for us to keep this as part of our scope of
practice
OWP> we have to make sure we are all doing everything we can
to
OWP> keep it...

OWP> What do you guys think about these statements?

OWP> Is the UE OT's domain of concern any more than it's PT's domain?
why
OWP> or why not?

OWP> Ron
