Sussane, thanks!

I'm not quite sure why she wore the TLSO for so long. I guess the
surgeon just wants to make sure the sight is well healed.

LOB = Loss of Balance, UE = Upper Extremity

I don't think she has a manual w/c, but I will check. She has been using
a power w/c everytime I've been to her house.

Yes, please send the e-books to my e-mail. Attachments are not allowed
on the OTlist.

Thanks for the care cure website, I've bookmarked it!

Ron

Subj: [OTlist] OTnow Colloboration With Spinal Cord Injury

s> Hi Ron!

s> Yes, I'm very willing to be part of your "bounce off" team!
s> I never _worked_ with SCI patients - but I sort of live with
s> one (boyfriend is a complete C5/C6 quad) - and I know how
s> hard it is to find knowledgeable health care people - you
s> have to become an expert on your own body - I guess I can
s> say we are:-)

s> Questions:
s> - The TLSO is a brace, yes? Is she wearing it because her
s> injury site isn't stable? (I believe it's a bit unusual so
s> long after injury, but not sure..)
s> - What is "LOB with UE movement"?
s> - "She has a donated power w/c (reclining captain's back)".
s> No manual chair??
s> - "..several months of rehab" - sounds like a lot these
s> days for a low injury. Were there complications?

s> I do have a lot of online resources to recommend to you. And
s> I have the e-booklets on "expected outcomes" for different
s> levels of SCI. Would like to send you the two relevant
s> ones - for T1-9, and T10. They are big - can I just attach
s> them to a private email to you?

s> About transfers, you can find several private transfer
s> videos on the Care Cure forums, here:
s> http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/showthread.php?t=50721
s> Besides that the Care Cure forums are also The Place to get
s> all kinds of questions answered - by both survivors and
s> professional people.

s> The sacral nerve stimulator trial sounds exiting - bowels
s> and bladder are two biggies. Just to imagine to get them out
s> of the way--- wouw!

s> But I didn't get this one:
s> "She has no bowel/bladder control so toilet transfers are
s> not an issue."

s> Whether she uses suppository and dig stim, or sacral nerve
s> stim for bowels - sitting would still be the best way to go.
s> (I can attest to the side lying position being way slower!)
s> Or, are you saying she has no routine/program - it just
s> happens...??

s> BTW - cathing can be done in the chair - but if using the
s> sacral nerve stimulator - wouldn't one prefer to be on a
s> toilet, or commode?

s> Besides that I second what Joan said - what does she want
s> and need to do? What has been addressed in rehab? The job
s> now is to implement and build on (the relevant parts of) it.
s> I guess there's a discharge letter - maybe sit down together
s> and work your way through it. Now that she's home it may
s> look very different to her, and what comes up might be very
s> relevant input for the COPM, for starters..

s> Wishing you both good luck!!

s> susanne, denmark
