How come almost every doctor's office I visit has never heard of OT, or they don't know the difference between OT and PT? Why???
Today, I called on a Doctor's office whose patient's I've seen. The referral person said she didn't know the difference between OT and PT. This is the same person whom I spoke to about 1 year ago! Not only do people not know about OT, they just can't seem to say it. Right after I was done talking with her about OT referrals for Medicare patients, she turns to her assistant and says: "The doctor doesn't order much PT for Medicare patients, does he?". OT is just not a common denominator in the medical practices that I call on! Unbelievable, isn't it? Ron -- "... as a profession that offers unique services that are ideally suited to meet the health, participation, and quality of life needs of people of all ages, occupational therapy is well-positioned to succeed and flourish in the 21st century." [Fred Somers, AJOT, April, 2005, p. 127] "The part of convalescence that I found most profoundly humiliating and depressing was [OT]... I was reduced to playing with brightly colored plastic letters ... like a three-year-old..."
